About Scale & Bake
A small, growing collection of free kitchen calculators, built to answer the questions that come up halfway through a recipe.
What this site is
Scale & Bake started with a simple frustration: most kitchen calculators on the web are buried at the bottom of long articles, hard to use on a phone, or give answers like "0.4167 cups." Each tool here is meant to be quick to use with floury hands and to give an answer you can measure.
Where the numbers come from
- Food safety (turkey thawing and roasting times, safe internal temperatures): the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).
- Ingredient weights: typical averages based on USDA FoodData Central household measures and widely used baking references. Real-world weights vary with brand and measuring technique, and each tool says so where it matters.
- Unit conversions (cups, tablespoons, milliliters, ounces, grams, oven temperatures): standard U.S. customary and metric definitions.
- Rules of thumb (air fryer adjustments, yeast amounts for different rise times, sourdough feeding schedules): common kitchen practice. These are clearly labeled as starting points rather than exact science.
